I was a bit nervous coming here since this is my first time to just pack up my life and move across the world for an indefinite amount of time. Knowing that I was going at it alone and having to jump into a rental car, drive a stick shift on the left side of the road and all that was a bit intimidating.
What I realized the first night here is that I am in no way doing this alone. I met some great new girlfriends on my first night who not only offered their friendship but a place for me to possibly live.
Night two was New Year's Eve and words cannot explain what a great experience I had. I was able to reconnect with all of my friends from the summertime and make some new ones too. Our hosts, Pule and his parents, brought out the turntables and a big group of us danced, laughed and enjoyed some deep soulful house music until the wee hours of the morning.
I have since been sleeping off the jet lag and relaxing at a super cute and crafty hotel in the university district of Melville.
My good friend Thabang has been helping me navigate the crazy streets of Jo'burg as I re-familiarize myself with the intricate web of highways and streets that confuse the heck out of me. I cannot wait until the day where I feel like I know where I am going without having to get lost 8 times over on my way to anywhere. The whole city is under construction right now in preparation for the World Cup, which complicates things even more.
Next week will be pretty exciting for me because I'll have a chance to reconnect with my students, who do not know that I am back.
It is truly a dream come true for me to be back here, none of which could have happened without the overwhelming support I've received from my family, friends (especially Gene and Jorja who have hosted me for the last few months), Teach with Africa, my colleagues at Kennedy High and especially the LEAP school.
Below are some pictures from the last couple months in California as I prepared for my departure...I miss you all already and cannot wait for you all to visit!!
Great to hear that you have arrived and are already enjoying yourself so much! I miss you but am intensely proud of you. Your students are so fortunate!
ReplyDeleteHey Ms. Kix!! It's Tobi! (just in case you don't recognize my real name haha) Well I'm happy your having such a wonderful time in Africa already! The sub today was okay. She did her best to try and get everything back to pace. She likes to plan things out so she'll be good! Now it's just the matter of us actually listening to her! Haha I'm just kidding. Well hope you have an even greater time there as time progresses as I already know you will. Your students your extremely lucky to have you!
ReplyDeleteTobi! Glad to hear that you guys have not staged a coup on the sub. Although I know you all can be quite loquacious and boisterous, treat each assignment as an entity that counts for your grade! While the sub may not yet have tenure, she is benign and quite adept at what she does... so continue to be nice to her and study for your vocab. final! : )
ReplyDeleteHi Sara,
ReplyDeleteRemember when I said to be careful about SA getting under your skin...? Guess it got you! Good on you to make the return to LEAP. SA is an amazing place and one I'm hoping to return to this summer as well.
Melville is a hip place and a good place to set up roots. I’m curious as to where you're staying there; I can't remember the place I stayed off hand, but it had a cool pool in back, which was an added bonus.
Keep me posted on what's going on with you and may 2010 be the most exciting year of your life!
Milton
Don't worry Ms. Kix! I got the test in the BAG! Well, I will soon enough :) Today, she tried something new and made us do a little quiz on grammar and it was extremely easy! At one point, after we were discussing the answers, I found myself being the only one actually answering aloud! I felt like a smarty pants and soon after me and Shane got into a debate that I was a teacher's pet, but I just love to get to know my teachers better! Things are going smoothly though so you don't need to worry. We're a good class! We won't cause her THAT much trouble. ;)
ReplyDeleteMilton,
ReplyDeleteYour premonitions were in fact correct. You have to let me know if you decide to come visit. So many of my friends would love to meet you and show you around Soweto and beyond. Also know that you have a place to stay and students to meet. So many friendly people await!

Tobi...just checking in...no whoopi cushions have emerged yet have they?
ReplyDeleteNo! Don't worry! But I feel as if one shall come soon...I'm just kidding :)
ReplyDeleteWe all miss you, but I'm glad you're happy and safe. Enjoy your stay and keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteNamaste'
Sara - I had a dream about you last night. I came to visit you and we ended up in a Safari, being chased by elephants. I know Africa is not all about safaris (but my stupid American subconscious doesn't). Thinking of you when asleep and awake. Love, Nicole
